2018 BMW M4 is a sports coupe and the most highly-engineered version of the 4 Series from BMW. BMW M4 2018 Cabrio itself series is bearing the factory designation F83. In the spring of 2014, the M4 first started as a coupé, the convertible came on the market in autumn. They replaced the coupe and convertible of the BMW M3. The four-door sedan, which has the same engine and is technically largely identical to the M4, is still marketed as the M3 (F80).
The BMW M4 was first presented in 2014 as the DTM Championship Edition, following the victory of Marco Wittmann in the DTM season 2014. The model is oriented in color to Wittmann’s M4 DTM of the season 2014. The 2014 Championship Edition is limited to 23 copies, Wittmann’s starting number.
After winning the 2016 season, BMW again presented a DTM Championship Edition of the M4. The M4 DTM Championship Edition is based on the 364 kW (500 hp) and water injection engine known from the M4 GTS. All performance data are identical to those of the GTS. The model is limited to 200 pieces and is based on the vehicles of the DTM. The biggest optical difference to the GTS lies in the smaller spoiler, as well as the omission of the orange-colored design elements. The price is 148.500 ⬠slightly higher than the sold out GTS.
2018 BMW M4 Features
In the development of the M4, a condition was the most consequent lightweight construction. The six-speed manual gearbox including two-disc clutch weighs 12 kilograms less than that of its predecessor. The bonnet with the characteristic “Powerdome” and the fenders are made of aluminum. The strut brace made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic weighs only 1.5 kilograms but offers a stiffness that would not be achieved with aluminum. The joint shaft is also made of CFRP. With these measures, the empty weight could be reduced by 60 kg compared to the predecessor.
Aerodynamics also plays a decisive role in sports cars. The “M-gills” behind the front wheels reduce the turbulence at the front wheels. The underfloor is smoothly clad. The newly developed “Active M Differential” optimizes the traction and stability during the lane change and acceleration from curves, at high cornering speed as well as at different road conditions. The traction optimization is carried out by means of an electronically controlled lamellar lock to reduce the speed differences between the rear wheels. The rear axle differential locks variable from zero to 100 percent.
The characteristics of the accelerator pedal, steering, damping, and shifting can be adjusted in three different electronic settings. On the steering wheel, there are two programmable M-keys in the range of the left thumb – the preferred setup can be activated with a push-button for different situations.
The electronically controlled shock absorbers of the “Adaptive M chassis” continuously adapt themselves to the road conditions and the driving style within milliseconds, thus ensuring optimal road contact, optimized traction, and even agile handling. With the “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport +” settings, the chassis layout can be configured from comfortable to sporty. The “Comfort” mode ensures comfortable movement in everyday driving situations and also ensures safety in case of sudden evasive maneuvers. In the “Sport” mode the wheel movements are reduced with sufficient comfort and the road contact is more direct; This mode should be ideal for country roads and wavy racing circuits. Minimum wheel movements and maximum driving dynamics on level surfaces and racetracks are achieved with the “Sport +” setting.
2018 BMW M4 Engine
Like the M3 sedan, the engine is a BiTurbo-Series six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2979 cm³. It offers a maximum power of 317 kW (431 hp) and a maximum torque of 550 Nm between 1850 and 5500 rpm. The choice is a manual six-speed transmission and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, the latter resulting in faster acceleration despite a weight of 40 kilograms.
The new turbo engine consumes less fuel than the high-speed V8 engine of its predecessor. With 8.8 or 8.3 liters per 100 kilometers, it has a 25 percent lower fuel consumption than the M3 of the fourth generation and meets the EU6 exhaust gas standard. To ensure that the engine is always well lubricated even under extreme driving conditions, a dry-sump lubrication ensures the oil flow. The oil pan of the 2018 BMW M4 is made of magnesium.
2018 BMW M4 GTS
At the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2015, BMW presented the special model M4 GTS based on the coupé. This is limited to 700 copies and was already sold out in November 2015.
The engine comes from the M4, but in the special model through water injection but 368 kW (500 hp). As a world novelty in a production car, the M4 GTS has OLED backlights. The first 2018 BMW M4 was delivered at the end of April 2017 at prices of ⬠142,600.
