The Volvo Concept Coupe will be the center of attention when Volvo Car Group (Volvo Cars) returns to the Tokyo Motor Show this November, as the company presents its new design strategy for customers and the media worldwide. Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Product Strategy and Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars and Thomas Ingenlath, the Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars, will also attend media day event on 20 and 21 November. Volvo Cars attends the Tokyo Motor Show this year for the first time in seven years, the sign of the growing importance of the Japanese market for Volvo car and a strong momentum of the company in the country. Volvo’s sales in Japan so far this year have been extremely strong, with sales up more than 25 percent compared with 2012 and a level not seen since late 1990. Japanese customers have particularly warmed to the Volvo V40, which was awarded prestigious 2013 Imported Car of the Year Award by the Automotive Researchers and Journalists Conference of Japan this month.
The rapid transformation of Volvo Cars is also very evident in the Volvo Concept Coupe which was first shown at 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Volvo Concept Coupe shows the ability of the new scalable enterprise architecture of the product and the four-cylinder Drive powertrain-E High Efficiency (formerly known as VEA) which is now available in six models of Volvo.
Strategy Volvo Cars is using electrification to create more powerful versions Family Drive-E engines, taking power figures up to V8 territory. The Volvo Concept Coupe is equipped with the ingenious plug-in hybrid technology of Volvo Cars. A gasoline engine high performance teamed with an electric motor on the rear axle Volvo Concept Coupe gives a total output of about 400 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque.
The Volvo Concept Coupe is the first of a series of three concept cars that show the new design direction for Volvo Cars, and paves the way for the introduction of the all new 2014 XC90. “We are creating a new product that combines a strong heritage with innovative technology and emotional design.
